Beech ‘Purpurea Pendula’ – Fagus sylvatica is a beautiful weeping tree with deep purple leaves. The branches sweep gracefully to the ground, creating a stunning curtain of purple foliage. Young leaves emerge in spring with a bright purple colour that deepens to a rich burgundy as summer progresses. This tree grows with a strong central stem, while its side branches weep dramatically, forming a natural dome shape over time. It’s smaller than standard beech trees, making it perfect for gardens where space is limited. The leaves often stay on the tree through winter, taking on copper tones and providing structure even in the coldest months. Each tree develops its own unique character as it grows, becoming more impressive with age.
Plant your Purpurea Pendula Beech in any well-drained soil in sun or partial shade, though you’ll get the best purple colour in full sun. It adapts to most soil types but prefers slightly acidic to neutral ground. Water thoroughly in the first two growing seasons until established. After that, it only needs watering during dry spells. Add a layer of mulch in spring, keeping it clear of the trunk. Very little pruning is needed – just remove any damaged branches in late summer if needed.
