Alder Buckthorn ‘Fine Line’, a cultivar of Frangula alnus, is a remarkable shrub that brings a touch of architectural elegance to gardens. This plant stands out with its narrow, columnar form and finely textured, feathery foliage, offering a unique vertical accent in landscapes.

The leaves of ‘Fine Line’ are long and slender, densely packed along upright branches. This creates a soft, airy appearance that belies the plant’s sturdy nature. The foliage emerges a fresh green in spring, maintains its vibrant colour through summer, and then puts on a spectacular show in autumn when it turns a bright, buttery yellow.

Despite its delicate appearance, ‘Fine Line’ is a tough and adaptable plant. It can thrive in a variety of soil conditions, from slightly acidic to alkaline, and tolerates both dry and wet soils once established. This resilience, combined with its compact, upright growth habit, makes it an excellent choice for smaller gardens or urban settings where space is at a premium.

Typically growing to a height of 1.5 to 2.5 metres with a narrow spread of just 60 to 90 cm, ‘Fine Line’ is perfect for creating natural screens or hedges without taking up much ground space. It can be used as a solitary specimen to add a strong vertical element to borders, or planted in groups to form a more substantial feature.

One of the great advantages of this cultivar is its low maintenance requirements. It rarely needs pruning to maintain its shape, although a light trim in late winter can encourage denser growth. ‘Fine Line’ is also notably resistant to pests and diseases, adding to its appeal for busy gardeners.

While Alder Buckthorn is known for its wildlife value, attracting various butterfly species, ‘Fine Line’ has been bred to be fruitless. This means it retains the ornamental qualities of the species without the potential for self-seeding, making it a more controlled option for garden use.

Care guide: Plant Alder Buckthorn ‘Fine Line’ in full sun to partial shade in moist, well-drained soil. In UK gardens, it’s adaptable to various conditions but prefers consistently damp soil. Water regularly during dry spells, especially when young. Prune in late winter or early spring to maintain shape and encourage dense growth. It’s generally pest and disease resistant, making it a fuss-free choice for gardeners.

Supplied well rooted in a 5 litre pot, approx 60/80cm tall.
