Ilex × koehneana ‘Chestnut Leaf’, also known as Chestnut Leaf Holly, is a distinctive and attractive evergreen that brings a touch of the exotic to UK gardens. This holly hybrid typically grows to a height of 4-8 metres with a spread of 3-5 metres over time, forming a large shrub or small tree with an upright, pyramidal habit.
The foliage of ‘Chestnut Leaf’ is its most striking feature. The leaves are large, up to 15cm long, with a glossy, dark green surface and deeply toothed margins reminiscent of chestnut leaves. This unique leaf shape sets it apart from other hollies and provides a bold, textural element in the garden year-round.
In late spring, ‘Chestnut Leaf’ produces small, inconspicuous white flowers. If pollinated (this cultivar is female and requires a male holly nearby for fruit set), these are followed by bright red berries in autumn and winter, creating a beautiful contrast against the dark foliage and adding winter interest to the garden.
In garden design, ‘Chestnut Leaf’ is versatile despite its size. It makes an excellent specimen plant, its unique foliage serving as a focal point in mixed borders or lawns. It can also be used for hedging or screening, where its dense growth and large leaves create an effective privacy barrier. In woodland gardens, it adds structure and year-round interest.
This holly is relatively low-maintenance once established. It’s tolerant of a range of soil types and pH levels, though it prefers slightly acidic conditions. It’s also quite hardy, tolerating urban pollution and coastal conditions, making it suitable for a variety of garden settings across the UK.
‘Chestnut Leaf’ also provides valuable habitat and food for wildlife. Its dense growth offers shelter for birds, while the berries, if present, are a food source for birds in winter.
