The Common Walnut, – Juglans regia, also known as the Persian Walnut or English Walnut, is a majestic deciduous tree that commands attention in any landscape. This impressive species can grow to heights of 20-30 metres, developing a broad, rounded crown that provides excellent shade. The bark is smooth and silvery-grey when young, gradually developing deep fissures as it matures, adding to its visual appeal. Its large, compound leaves are aromatic when crushed and turn a warm golden yellow in autumn before falling. In spring, the tree produces separate male and female flowers on the same plant. The male catkins are long and pendulous, while the female flowers are small and inconspicuous.
The tree’s most prized feature is its fruit – the familiar walnut. These develop inside green, fleshy husks that split open as the nut ripens. Walnuts are not only delicious but also packed with nutrients, making them a valuable food source for both humans and wildlife. The wood of the Walnut tree is highly sought after in furniture making for its beautiful grain and rich colour.
Walnut trees have a long history of cultivation, valued for their nuts, timber, and ornamental qualities. They make excellent specimen trees for large gardens or parks, providing interest throughout the year. It’s worth noting that Walnuts produce a chemical called juglone, which can inhibit the growth of some plants nearby, so careful planning is needed when deciding where to plant.
Plant your Common Walnut in full sun and deep, well-drained soil. It prefers fertile, slightly alkaline soil but will tolerate a range of conditions. Water regularly when young, but once established, it’s quite drought-tolerant. Pruning isn’t usually necessary except to remove dead or crossing branches. Feed with a balanced fertiliser in spring. Be prepared to compete with squirrels for the nuts – they’re often quick to harvest them!
