The Chinese Juniper ‘Blue Alps’ (Juniperus chinensis ‘Blue Alps’) is a stunning evergreen shrub that adds a touch of cool, calming colour to any garden. With its soft, blue-grey foliage and compact, pyramidal growth habit, this juniper variety is a true standout in the landscape.

At 40-60cm tall, the ‘Blue Alps’ is a medium-sized juniper that is perfect for adding structure and interest to borders, rock gardens, or as a low-growing hedge. Its dense, evergreen foliage provides year-round interest, while the blue-hued needles take on a silvery sheen in the sunlight, creating a mesmerizing effect.

This resilient juniper is well-suited to the UK climate, thriving in full sun and well-drained soil. It requires minimal maintenance, needing only occasional pruning to maintain its shape and size. The ‘Blue Alps’ is also highly drought-tolerant, making it a reliable choice for gardeners looking to create low-maintenance, water-wise plantings.

Beyond its visual appeal, the Chinese Juniper ‘Blue Alps’ is also a valuable addition to the garden for its wildlife-friendly properties. Its dense foliage provides excellent cover and nesting sites for a variety of birds, while its berries offer a food source for foraging creatures.

Whether used as a focal point, a border plant, or a groundcover, the ‘Blue Alps’ Juniper is a versatile and eye-catching choice that will bring a sense of tranquility and natural beauty to any garden.

The Chinese Juniper ‘Blue Alps’ is a hardy, low-maintenance shrub that thrives in the UK climate. Plant it in full sun and well-drained soil for best results. Water it regularly during the first year to establish a deep root system, then reduce watering to only during extended dry spells.

Prune the ‘Blue Alps’ Juniper in late winter or early spring to maintain its shape and size. Remove any dead or damaged branches, and thin out the interior of the plant to improve air circulation. Avoid pruning during the summer months, as this can stress the plant.

Fertilise the ‘Blue Alps’ Juniper in early spring with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser to encourage healthy growth and vibrant foliage. Be careful not to over-fertilise, as this can lead to excessive growth and weaken the plant.

With its resilient nature and stunning blue-grey hues, the Chinese Juniper ‘Blue Alps’ is a wonderful addition to any UK garden, providing year-round interest and low-maintenance appeal.
