Chinese Juniper ‘Kaizuka Variegata’, also known as Variegated Hollywood Juniper, is a striking evergreen that can bring a touch of elegance and colour to your garden. This variety of Juniperus chinensis stands out with its attractive variegated foliage, featuring a mix of green and creamy-white that creates a lively, eye-catching effect. It’s an upright, slow-growing tree that forms an irregular, somewhat open shape, making it perfect for gardeners who want to add a distinctive feature to their outdoor space.

‘Kaizuka Variegata’ typically grows to about 3-4 metres tall and 1.5-2 metres wide over 10 years, though it can eventually reach greater heights if left unpruned. Its unique form means it can work well as a focal point in many garden settings, from modern minimalist designs to more traditional landscapes. The variegated foliage provides year-round interest, with its irregular branching pattern creating fascinating textures and contrasts, especially when lit at night.

One of the best things about this juniper is how it can add a sense of lightness and intrigue to your garden. Its upright shape and open branching pattern create a natural focal point, drawing the eye and adding interest to your garden design. The variegated foliage creates a bright, airy effect that looks good in both contemporary and Asian-inspired garden styles.

Gardeners often choose ‘Kaizuka Variegata’ for its ornamental value and relatively low-maintenance nature. Once established, it’s quite tolerant of different soil types and can cope with urban pollution, making it a good choice for town gardens. It’s also resistant to most pests and diseases, so you won’t need to worry about constant care.

This juniper works well in various garden settings. It can serve as a stunning specimen tree, create an interesting privacy screen, or act as a backdrop to other plantings. You could use it to frame an entrance, as part of a rock garden, or even grow it in a large container on a patio.

Wildlife enthusiasts will be pleased to know that junipers can provide shelter and nesting sites for birds. The dense foliage offers protection from predators and harsh weather.

If you’re after a plant that looks good all year without needing lots of work, ‘Kaizuka Variegata’ is a great choice. It keeps its unique shape and variegated colour through all seasons, providing constant interest in your garden.

Chinese Junipers have been popular in gardens for centuries, valued for their hardiness and versatility. The ‘Kaizuka Variegata’ variety brings a colourful twist to this classic plant, offering all the toughness of a juniper with an extra dose of visual impact.

For gardeners looking to add year-round structure and a touch of brightness to their gardens, Chinese Juniper ‘Kaizuka Variegata’ is an excellent option. Its attractive variegated foliage, unique form, and easy-care nature make it a valuable addition to any outdoor space, especially for those who want something truly distinctive.

Caring for Chinese Juniper ‘Kaizuka Variegata’ is relatively straightforward. Plant it in a spot that gets full sun to partial shade – full sun will help maintain the best variegation. It prefers well-drained soil but can adapt to various soil types, including poor or rocky soils. Water regularly when it’s first planted to help it establish. Once settled, it’s quite drought-tolerant but will appreciate occasional deep watering during prolonged dry spells. You don’t need to feed it often – a light application of slow-release fertiliser in spring is enough. Pruning isn’t necessary to maintain its shape, but you can trim it lightly if you want to control its size or enhance its form. Keep an eye out for any signs of browning or dieback, which could indicate stress. ‘Kaizuka Variegata’ is very hardy and can cope with winters without extra protection, even in exposed or coastal areas.
