Juniperus squamata ‘Holger’, commonly known as Holger Flaky Juniper, is a captivating evergreen shrub that brings a unique splash of colour to garden landscapes. This cultivar is particularly noteworthy for its striking bi-colored foliage, which sets it apart from other junipers. New growth emerges in a vibrant creamy-yellow, creating a stunning contrast against the mature blue-green needles. This colour variation provides year-round interest, with the most intense colouration typically occurring in spring and early summer.
‘Holger’ exhibits a low, spreading habit, typically growing to a height of 0.5-1 meter with a spread of 1.5-2 meters over time. This growth pattern makes it an excellent choice for ground cover, spilling over retaining walls, or as a feature in rock gardens. The branches have a slightly arching habit, giving the plant a soft, flowing appearance that can help soften hard landscape elements. Like other flaky junipers, ‘Holger’ is prized for its hardiness and adaptability.
It thrives in full sun, which enhances its colour contrast, but can tolerate partial shade. Once established, it’s drought-tolerant and can withstand poor soil conditions, making it an ideal low-maintenance option for challenging landscape areas. The dense growth habit of ‘Holger’ also makes it effective for erosion control on slopes. Whether used as a stand-alone specimen, in mass plantings for ground cover, or as part of a mixed conifer garden, Juniperus squamata ‘Holger’ offers UK gardeners a hardy, visually interesting plant that provides structure and colour throughout the year, adding a touch of golden brightness to gardens even in the depths of winter.
Cultural Requirements
Junipers, in general, are quite hardy and can tolerate a range of soil conditions, though they prefer well-drained soils. ‘Holger’ would likely thrive best in full sun to bring out its blue hue, but it’s also adaptable to partial shade. Regular watering during its initial years will benefit its growth, but mature plants are relatively drought-tolerant.
Maintenance
Junipers are relatively low maintenance. They may need occasional pruning if a specific shape or size is desired, but ‘Holger’, with its natural upright form, often requires minimal intervention.
Hardiness
Juniperus squamata and its cultivars are generally hardy, able to withstand cold temperatures – down to -20C and a variety of environmental conditions.
