Juniperus × pfitzeriana ‘Monlep’, commonly known as Mint Julep Juniper, is a distinctive cultivar that brings a fresh, bright presence to gardens. This evergreen shrub typically grows to a height of 0.9-1.2 metres with a spread of 1.8-2.4 metres, forming a low, mounding shape with gracefully arching branches.

The foliage of ‘Monlep’ is its most striking feature, consisting of soft, scale-like leaves in a vibrant mint-green colour that remains consistent throughout the year. This cheerful hue brightens the garden and provides an excellent contrast to darker green or purple-leaved plants.

In garden design, ‘Monlep’ is versatile and can be used in various ways. Its spreading habit makes it excellent for ground cover, especially on slopes where it can help control erosion. It’s also effective cascading over walls or as a low hedge. In rock gardens, its arching form softens hard edges and adds movement to the landscape.

‘Monlep’ is known for its adaptability and low maintenance needs. It tolerates a range of soil conditions and is drought-resistant once established, making it a good choice for water-wise gardens. Its tolerance of light shade allows it to be used in areas where many other junipers might struggle.

While not grown for flowers, ‘Monlep’ may produce small blue-grey berries that attract birds, adding wildlife value to the garden. Its dense growth also provides good cover for small animals.

One of the key advantages of ‘Monlep’ is its resistance to juniper blight and spider mites, common problems for many junipers. This resilience makes it a reliable choice for gardeners looking for a trouble-free plant.
