The Hybrid Dunkeld Larch is a remarkable tree that offers something special in every season. Unlike most conifers, this tree drops its needles in winter, but more than makes up for it with stunning seasonal changes. In spring, bright green, soft needles emerge alongside pretty pink-red flowers. Summer brings a lovely fresh green canopy, which turns to brilliant gold in autumn before creating an elegant winter silhouette.
This vigorous tree is a cross between Japanese and European Larch, combining the best features of both parents. It grows quickly and straight, with attractive reddish-brown bark that develops deep fissures with age. The small cones add extra interest, starting purple and ripening to brown.
The tree is particularly suited to gardens with space to grow, where its changing seasons can be fully appreciated. Birds love to nest in its branches, and its open canopy allows plenty of light through for underplanting with spring bulbs or woodland flowers.
Plant your Hybrid Dunkeld Larch in any reasonably fertile, well-drained soil. It prefers full sun but can handle light shade. While it’s happy in most soils, it doesn’t like waterlogged conditions. Water well in the first growing season, but once established, it needs little attention. No regular pruning is needed – just remove any dead or damaged branches in late winter. The tree naturally sheds its needles in autumn, so some garden cleanup will be needed.
