Tulip Tree ‘Snow Bird’ – Liriodendron tulipifera is a rare and captivating variegated form of the classic tulip tree, offering a completely fresh perspective on this beloved deciduous tree. The foliage is the star attraction, with each leaf displaying irregular splashes and margins of creamy white against fresh green, creating a dappled, light-catching effect throughout the growing season. This variegation is most pronounced on new growth, giving the tree a luminous quality that brightens shaded areas and adds textural interest to any planting scheme. The distinctive tulip-shaped leaves, which give the species its common name, retain their characteristic lobed form in this cultivar, typically measuring 10-15cm across.

In early summer, mature specimens produce greenish-yellow flowers marked with orange at the base, resembling tulip blooms. These appear high in the canopy and are followed by cone-like fruits that persist into winter. The variegated foliage provides season-long interest, whilst autumn brings a transformation as the leaves turn soft yellow tones before falling. The tree develops an upright, pyramidal habit when young, gradually broadening with age to form a stately specimen with strong architectural presence.

‘Snow Bird’ makes an exceptional focal point in larger gardens, where its variegated foliage can be appreciated from a distance. It performs beautifully as a specimen tree on lawns or in mixed borders, where the light foliage provides contrast against darker evergreens. The tree prefers a sheltered position to protect the variegated leaves from scorching winds, and benefits from some protection during its formative years. Once established, it develops good resilience and a strong root system.

This cultivar is supplied at 150/175cm in a 3-litre pot, representing a well-established young tree ready for planting. At this size, the tree has developed sufficient root structure to establish quickly whilst remaining manageable for garden planting. The variegation is stable and will continue to develop as the tree matures.

Care Guide

Plant in moist, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. Tulip trees prefer slightly acidic to neutral conditions and benefit from a position in full sun to partial shade, though ‘Snow Bird’ shows best variegation in bright light with some afternoon shade. Choose a sheltered spot away from strong winds, which can damage the variegated foliage.

Water regularly during the first two growing seasons to establish a deep root system. Once established, the tree shows reasonable drought tolerance but performs best with consistent moisture during dry spells. Apply a generous mulch of well-rotted compost or bark around the root zone each spring, keeping it clear of the trunk.

Feed with a balanced slow-release fertiliser in early spring. Minimal pruning is required beyond removing any dead, damaged or crossing branches in late winter. Remove any all-green reverted shoots as soon as they appear to maintain the variegated character. The tree naturally develops an attractive form without extensive intervention.

Protect young trees from harsh winter winds and late spring frosts, which can damage tender new growth. In exposed gardens, consider providing a windbreak during the first few years. The tree is generally pest and disease resistant, though may occasionally experience aphid activity in spring.
