Lodgepole Pine
Pinus contorta
The Lodgepole Pine – Pinus contorta is a robust North American native valued for its rapid growth and adaptability. Its subspecies include the coastal form ‘contorta’ and the inland ‘latifolia’, each bringing different characteristics to the garden.
This versatile pine develops a straight, slender trunk with distinctive orange-brown bark and dark green needles held in pairs. The variety ‘Chief Joseph’ offers unique winter interest with needles turning bright yellow in cold weather, while ‘Taylor’s Sunburst’ features golden-yellow spring growth.
True to its name, Native Americans used the straight trunks for lodge poles. Today, it’s prized for rapid screening, windbreaks, and timber production, growing up to 60cm annually in good conditions. The twisted needles, typically 5-8cm long, create dense foliage that effectively blocks wind.
Remarkably adaptable, Lodgepole Pine thrives in poor soils and exposed sites, making it ideal for challenging locations and coastal gardens. Its tolerance of salt spray and strong winds makes it particularly valuable for maritime plantings.
