The Crab Apple Malus sylvestris brings magic to gardens in every season. This lovely native tree puts on a show starting with masses of pink-tinged white blossom in spring. The flowers cover the branches, creating a stunning display that bees and other pollinators love.
By summer, the tree wears a coat of healthy green leaves that give welcome shade. Small fruits start to form, gradually growing and colouring up through autumn. The fruits might look tiny compared to eating apples, but they’re brilliant for making into jellies and preserves.
This tree fits perfectly into most gardens, growing to a manageable 6-8 metres tall. The spreading branches make a lovely rounded shape that looks natural in any setting. You’ll spot plenty of birds nipping in and out, as they love both nesting in the branches and eating the fruit.
As one of our true native trees, the Crab Apple suits our climate down to the ground. It’s been growing wild in British woods since the last ice age. The autumn colours are rather lovely too, with leaves turning buttery yellow before falling.
Your Crab Apple will grow happily in any reasonable garden soil, though it prefers spots with good drainage. Plant it where it gets plenty of sun or light shade. Water well in the first growing season to help it settle in. After that, it needs very little care beyond removing any dead or crossed branches in late winter. A mulch of garden compost in spring will keep it thriving. The tree naturally shrugs off most problems and grows stronger each year.
