The Dawn Redwood brings a touch of prehistoric grace to gardens. Though it looks like an evergreen, this remarkable tree is actually deciduous, putting on a brilliant show of copper and gold colours in autumn before dropping its soft, feathery needles.
In spring, fresh bright green foliage emerges, creating a light, airy canopy. The tree grows quickly, forming a neat pyramid shape without any pruning needed. The trunk develops a lovely reddish-brown bark that peels in strips, adding winter interest when the branches are bare.
Though it can eventually grow quite tall, it takes many years to reach its full height. In most gardens, it grows happily as a medium-sized tree for many years. The neat, upright shape means it won’t spread too wide, making it perfect for smaller spaces.
This tree was thought extinct until the 1940s when it was found growing in China. Now it makes a fantastic garden tree, bringing a hint of the ancient world to modern spaces. The soft, ferny foliage moves prettily in summer breezes, casting light shade beneath.
Plant your Dawn Redwood in any reasonable garden soil where it gets plenty of sun or light shade. Though it likes moisture, it grows well in most spots once settled in. Water regularly in the first growing season to help establish a good root system. After that, it needs little attention beyond removing any dead wood in late winter. A yearly mulch keeps it happy, and it rarely suffers from pests or diseases in our climate.
