Mock Orange ‘Virginal’ – Philadelphus x virginalis is a stunning deciduous shrub that adds a touch of elegance and fragrance to any garden. This classic mock orange cultivar is known for its abundant, pure white double flowers that bloom in late spring to early summer, creating a spectacular display that never fails to impress.
The flowers of ‘Virginal’ are larger than those of many other mock orange varieties, measuring up to 5 cm (2 inches) in diameter. They are arranged in clusters along the shrub’s arching branches, which are covered in dark green, ovate leaves. The flowers emit a strong, sweet fragrance reminiscent of orange blossoms, filling the garden with a delightful scent that attracts pollinators such as bees and butterflies.
Growing to a mature height of 2-3 metres (6-10 feet) and a similar spread, ‘Virginal’ is a substantial shrub that can serve as a beautiful focal point in the garden or be incorporated into a mixed border. Its upright, arching habit creates a graceful silhouette, and the dark green foliage provides a lovely backdrop for the pure white flowers.
‘Virginal’ is a versatile shrub that can adapt to a range of growing conditions. It thrives in full sun to partial shade and can tolerate most well-draining soils. This mock orange is also relatively low-maintenance, requiring only occasional pruning after flowering to maintain its shape and encourage healthy growth.
To ensure your Mock Orange ‘Virginal’ thrives, plant it in a spot with well-draining soil and full sun to partial shade. Water regularly during the first growing season to help establish a strong root system. Once established, mock oranges are relatively drought-tolerant but benefit from occasional watering during extended dry periods. Apply a layer of organic mulch around the base of the shrub to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Prune your ‘Virginal’ immediately after flowering, removing any dead, damaged, or crossing branches to maintain a desired shape and promote healthy growth.
