Norway Spruce ‘Cobra’ – Picea abies is an extraordinary weeping conifer that commands attention with its dramatically pendulous branches and architectural form. This exceptional cultivar features dark green needles that cascade downwards in serpentine fashion, creating a living sculpture that adds year-round interest to gardens. Supplied at 200/250cm, this is a substantial specimen that delivers immediate impact, with each plant carefully selected to showcase the distinctive weeping habit that makes ‘Cobra’ so desirable.

What sets our Norway Spruce ‘Cobra’ apart is the exceptional quality of our specimens. These are by far the best examples of ‘Cobra’ available, unique to us and grown to the highest standards. Each plant in the 30-litre container has been meticulously nurtured to develop the characteristic trailing branches and robust root system that ensures successful establishment. The weeping branches create an almost prehistoric appearance, reminiscent of the serpent that inspired its name, with new growth emerging bright green before maturing to a deeper, richer shade.

This remarkable conifer works beautifully as a focal point in mixed borders, where its dramatic form provides contrast against rounded shrubs and upright perennials. The pendulous branches can be trained over supports or allowed to trail naturally, creating different effects depending on your design preferences. In winter, when the garden quietens, ‘Cobra’ truly shines, its evergreen foliage and distinctive silhouette providing structure and visual interest even in the darkest months. The weeping habit also makes it an excellent choice for creating height without excessive spread, perfect for gardens where space is at a premium.

The dark green needles provide an excellent backdrop for lighter-coloured plants, whilst the textural quality of the foliage adds depth and dimension to planting schemes. As the plant matures, its character only intensifies, with the weeping branches becoming more pronounced and the overall form developing greater presence. This is a conifer for those who appreciate plants with personality and sculptural qualities that evolve over time.

Care Guide

Plant your Norway Spruce ‘Cobra’ in a position with full sun to partial shade, ensuring the soil is moist but well-drained. This adaptable conifer tolerates a range of soil types, including clay, loam and sandy soils, provided they don’t become waterlogged. When planting, dig a hole twice the width of the root ball and incorporate organic matter to improve soil structure and drainage.

Water regularly during the first two growing seasons to establish a deep, extensive root system. Once established, ‘Cobra’ shows good drought tolerance, though it performs best with consistent moisture during prolonged dry spells. Apply a layer of mulch around the base, keeping it away from the trunk, to retain moisture and suppress weeds.

Feed in early spring with a balanced slow-release fertiliser formulated for conifers. This supports healthy growth and maintains the rich green colour of the needles. Pruning is rarely necessary, but you can remove any dead or damaged branches in late winter. The weeping habit develops naturally, though you may wish to train or stake the leader if you prefer a more upright central stem.

‘Cobra’ is hardy throughout the British Isles and copes well with exposed positions once established. It’s relatively pest and disease resistant, though good air circulation helps prevent any fungal issues. In particularly harsh winters, the evergreen foliage may bronze slightly but will recover its colour as temperatures rise in spring.
