Serbian Spruce Seeds, from the elegant Picea omorika, present a unique opportunity for UK gardeners to grow a tree known for its slender, graceful form and striking foliage. Native to the mountainous regions of Serbia and Bosnia, this species is admired for its narrow, conical shape, making it an excellent choice for smaller gardens or tight spaces. The seeds are the start of a journey to grow a tree that adapts well to a range of soil types, though it prefers moist, well-drained conditions.

Serbian Spruce is noted for its tolerance to both drought and pollution, making it a resilient choice for urban gardens.

Its foliage, featuring glossy dark green needles with silvery undersides, adds a distinctive two-tone effect. Planting these seeds contributes to creating a visually appealing and serene landscape. RHS Award of Garden Merit

Natural Germination: Serbian Spruce seeds benefit from cold stratification to break dormancy. Planting them outdoors in autumn allows them to experience natural winter conditions, aiding in spring germination.

Artificial Stratification: For controlled germination, mix the seeds with a moist substrate and refrigerate for about 3 months. This simulates the natural cold period, preparing the seeds for successful germination when planted in warmer conditions.

Although Picea omorika seed does not require stratification for germination it may benefit from 90 days cold stratification. Seed should germinate at room temperature.
