Blue Colorado Spruce ‘Blue Diamond’ 60/80cm (7L)

Blue Diamond is one of the finest blue spruces you can grow, offering exceptional silver-blue colour in a more manageable size than standard varieties. This outstanding Picea pungens cultivar combines intense blue needles with a naturally neat growth habit that makes it perfect for modern gardens.

The colour is what catches your eye first. Blue Diamond has some of the brightest silver-blue needles of any spruce. They’re thick and waxy with a powdery blue coating that makes them look almost frosted. This isn’t just a summer feature – the colour stays vibrant all year and often looks even better in winter when real frost adds to the effect.

Blue Diamond grows steadily but stays more compact than many blue spruces. It typically adds 15-20cm per year, reaching about 3-4 metres tall and 2 metres wide after ten years. Given time, it can reach 6-8 metres, making it ideal for medium-sized gardens. The shape is naturally pyramidal with dense, well-spaced branches that create perfect tiers.

What makes this variety special is the quality of its growth. The branches are sturdy and don’t droop or break under snow. The needles are densely packed, giving the whole tree a full, healthy appearance. New growth in spring emerges an even brighter blue than the mature needles, creating a beautiful contrast that lasts several weeks.

Blue Diamond makes a superb specimen tree. Plant it in a lawn where its colour and form can be properly appreciated. It’s equally effective as part of a mixed border with other conifers and shrubs. The blue colour looks fantastic against red brick houses or rendered walls. Some gardeners use it as a living Christmas tree, stringing lights through its perfect branches.

This variety represents the best of modern spruce breeding. While the species comes from the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, Blue Diamond was selected for its superior colour and garden-friendly size. It combines the toughness of wild spruces with refined good looks.

The tree is incredibly resilient. It shrugs off harsh winters and doesn’t mind exposed, windy positions. Once the roots are established after a couple of years, it copes well with dry periods. It’s also resistant to most pests and diseases that affect other conifers. This toughness means you get maximum impact with minimum maintenance.

Birds appreciate Blue Diamond too. The dense branches provide excellent nesting sites and winter shelter. Goldfinches and siskins feed on the seeds when the small cones ripen. The tree becomes a wildlife hub without any effort on your part.

For the best effect, give Blue Diamond enough space to develop its natural shape. It pairs beautifully with golden conifers for a striking contrast. Purple-leaved shrubs also complement the blue needles perfectly. Underplant with heathers or low perennials, but keep them well away from the trunk. Remember that the needles are quite sharp, so position it away from narrow paths.
