The Colorado Blue Spruce is a stunning evergreen tree that brings a touch of the American Rockies to UK gardens. This variety of Picea pungens is famed for its striking blue-grey needles that create a beautiful contrast against other green plants in the garden. It’s a brilliant choice for gardeners looking to add year-round interest and a bit of drama to their outdoor space.

Colorado Blue Spruce grows into a classic Christmas tree shape, with a broad pyramidal form. It’s a slow grower, typically adding about 30cm per year, which means it won’t quickly outgrow its space. Over time, it can reach heights of 15-25 metres, but in most UK gardens, it usually stays smaller.

The tree’s standout feature is its colour. The needles have a waxy coating that gives them their distinctive blue-grey hue. This colour is at its most intense on new growth in spring, providing a lovely seasonal display. The blue colour also tends to be more pronounced on trees grown in full sun.

Colorado Blue Spruce is tough as old boots. It’s hardy throughout the UK and copes well with a range of conditions, including drought once established. It’s also tolerant of urban pollution, making it a good choice for town gardens.

Gardeners love this tree for its versatility. You can use it as a stunning specimen plant, where its colour and shape will create a focal point. Or plant a few to create a unique, blue-tinted screen or windbreak. It looks fantastic in both modern and traditional garden designs, adding a touch of year-round colour and structure.

Wildlife fans will be chuffed to know that Blue Spruce provides good shelter for birds, especially in winter. The dense branches offer protection from harsh weather and predators.

For gardeners after a low-maintenance, eye-catching evergreen that brings year-round interest, Colorado Blue Spruce is a top choice. Its beautiful blue-grey foliage adds a touch of magic to any garden, creating a focal point that’s sure to impress visitors. Whether you’re planning a new garden or looking to add some sparkle to an existing one, this spruce could be just what you need.

Colorado Blue Spruce is pretty easy to look after, which is great news for busy UK gardeners. It’s happiest in full sun, where its blue colour will be at its most intense, but it can handle partial shade too. It prefers well-drained, slightly acidic soil, but is adaptable to various soil types. When you first plant it, water regularly for the first growing season to help it establish. After that, it’s fairly drought-tolerant. You don’t need to feed it much – a light application of general-purpose fertiliser in spring is enough. Pruning isn’t usually necessary unless you want to shape it or remove any dead or damaged branches.
