‘The Blues’ is an exceptional weeping variety of blue spruce that brings graceful elegance to any garden. This rare cultivar showcases a distinctive pendulous growth habit, with branches that cascade downward in a gentle, flowing manner, creating a living sculpture in the garden.
The tree’s stunning silvery-blue needles maintain the intense colouration characteristic of blue spruces, with the foliage taking on an even more brilliant hue during colder months. Each needle contributes to the overall shimmering effect, particularly striking when backlit by morning or evening sun. The weeping form creates layers of blue-tinted foliage that move gently in the breeze, adding dynamic beauty to the landscape.
This unique specimen typically reaches 6-8 feet in height with a spread of 4-5 feet over 10 years, though its ultimate size can vary depending on staking and training methods. The weeping habit allows for creative shaping – it can be trained over arbours, allowed to cascade over walls, or staked upright with branches flowing downward like a blue waterfall.
‘The Blues’ thrives in full sun and well-drained soil, showing excellent cold hardiness and drought tolerance once established. Its adaptable nature makes it suitable for all parts of the country. For optimal colour and growth, provide consistent moisture during the first few years and avoid heavy clay soils that retain excessive water.
This remarkable weeping blue spruce serves as an outstanding focal point in rock gardens, Asian-inspired landscapes, or as a specimen plant near water features where its flowing form can be fully appreciated. Its rarity and distinctive beauty make ‘The Blues’ a prized addition for collectors and gardeners seeking something truly extraordinary.
