The Lacebark Pine, or Pinus bungeana, is a right corker of a tree that’s bound to turn heads in any garden. This evergreen beauty is famous for its stunning bark, which peels away in patches to reveal a patchwork of green, white, and purple – it’s like nature’s own camouflage pattern. Growing slowly to about 10-20 metres tall, it’s more of a long-term investment than a quick fix, but it’s worth the wait. The tree starts off with a pyramidal shape when young, but as it ages, it develops a broader, more open crown that’s quite the sight.

The needles of the Lacebark Pine come in bundles of three and are a lovely bright green colour, giving the tree a fresh, vibrant look all year round. In spring, you might spot small purple cones on the branches, which mature to a light brown over a couple of years. These cones are relatively small compared to some other pines, usually about 5-7 cm long.

This pine is a bit of a conversation starter in gardens. Its unique bark makes it a standout specimen tree, perfect for creating a focal point in larger spaces. It’s also a hit with wildlife, providing shelter for birds and small animals. In its native China, it’s considered a symbol of longevity and is often planted near temples and in traditional gardens.

Plant your Lacebark Pine in a spot with full sun and well-drained soil. It’s not too fussy about soil type but doesn’t like sitting in wet feet. Once established, it’s fairly drought-tolerant. Pruning isn’t usually necessary unless you’re after a particular shape. It’s generally pest and disease resistant, but keep an eye out for any signs of needle blight or bark beetles. A bit of mulch around the base can help retain moisture and suppress weeds.
