Natural Germination: Pinus elliottii seeds naturally require a period of cold stratification to break dormancy. This can be achieved by sowing the seeds outdoors in autumn, allowing them to experience the winter cold. This natural process prepares the seeds for germination in spring, aligning with the seasonal changes.
Artificial Stratification: For artificial stratification, mix the seeds with slightly moist sand and store them in a refrigerator at about 2-5°C for 60-90 days. This simulates the natural winter conditions, effectively breaking the seed dormancy. After this period, the seeds can be sown in a warm environment, ideally at a temperature of 18-22°C, to encourage germination.
