The Bhutan Pine is a large and stately tree that can grow to heights ranging from 30 to 50 meters (98 to 164 feet) or even taller when fully mature. It features a straight, cylindrical trunk with rough, grayish-brown bark that becomes furrowed with age. The branches are often horizontal and well-spaced along the trunk.

One of the key identifying features of the Bhutan Pine is its long, slender needles. These needles typically measure 12 to 20 centimetres (5 to 8 inches) in length and are borne in clusters of five. They are dark green and have a graceful, drooping appearance, adding to the tree’s elegance.

The Bhutan Pine produces oval-shaped cones that are typically 8 to 15 centimetres (3 to 6 inches) in length. The cones are initially green but mature to a brown colour. They contain the seeds of the tree and are an important part of its reproductive cycle.

This pine species thrives in mountainous regions with well-drained soil and ample sunlight. It is well-adapted to cold and temperate climates, making it suitable for high-altitude environments. Once established, Bhutan Pines are relatively low-maintenance, requiring only occasional pruning for shaping or thinning.

Bhutan Pines are valued in landscaping for their striking appearance and tolerance to challenging growing conditions. They are often planted in parks, large gardens, and arboretums, where their tall stature and graceful needles make them a focal point. Additionally, their dense foliage can provide shade and wind protection.

In the regions where it is native, the Bhutan Pine holds cultural significance and is sometimes used for timber in construction and carpentry. It also plays a role in traditional medicine in some communities.
