Mountain White Pine ‘Pendula’ is a stunning weeping cultivar that brings dramatic architectural interest to gardens. This graceful conifer features long, soft blue-green needles arranged in bundles of five, cascading elegantly from pendulous branches that create a waterfall effect.
When young, this specimen requires staking to establish its desired height, after which the branches will weep dramatically to create a unique sculptural form. The needles, measuring 5-10cm in length, maintain their colour throughout the year, providing lasting interest in all seasons. The bark develops a distinctive silver-grey patina as it matures, adding another layer of visual appeal.
In spring, small purple-red male cones appear, followed by longer feminine cones that mature to brown over 18-24 months. These decorative cones add winter interest and provide food for wildlife, particularly small birds.
Growing Guide:
Plant in full sun to partial shade in well-drained, slightly acidic soil. While adaptable to most soil types, avoid waterlogged conditions. This cultivar shows good tolerance to exposed positions but benefits from shelter from strong winds in coastal areas. Regular watering is essential during the first growing season to establish a strong root system.
Minimal pruning is required – remove only dead or crossing branches in late winter. Apply a balanced fertiliser in spring, followed by a mulch of well-rotted organic matter to retain moisture and suppress weeds. This cultivar shows good resistance to pests and diseases common to pines.
