The Japanese White Pine ‘Hagoromo’ – Pinus parviflora is a truly exceptional dwarf conifer that brings the essence of Japanese gardens to any outdoor space. This compact cultivar, currently offered at 10/20cm, showcases distinctive blue-green needles that are notably shorter and more delicate than the species, creating an ethereal, cloud-like appearance that inspired its name – ‘Hagoromo’ meaning ‘feather robe’ in Japanese.

The plant develops a naturally compact, irregular form with gracefully ascending branches that create an artistic silhouette. Its needles grow in bundles of five, displaying a subtle twist that catches light beautifully, especially when touched by morning dew or frost. The bark develops an attractive grey-brown colour as it matures, adding year-round interest to the garden.

This slow-growing pine makes an excellent choice for rock gardens, container plantings, or as a specimen in smaller gardens. It’s particularly striking when paired with complementary plants such as dwarf Japanese maples or low-growing heathers. During spring, small brown cones appear, adding further decorative appeal.

For optimal growth in British gardens, plant ‘Hagoromo’ in well-drained, slightly acidic soil in a position that receives full sun to light partial shade. While established plants show good drought tolerance, regular watering is essential during the first growing season. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring, and maintain a layer of mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds.

This cultivar shows excellent cold hardiness and adapts well to British winters, though protection from harsh winds is beneficial, particularly for young specimens.
