Japanese White Pine ‘Glauca’ is a graceful conifer that brings a soft, misty blue colour to gardens. Its long, twisted needles grow in bundles of five, creating a beautiful blue-grey effect that stands out against other garden plants. This pine grows naturally into an attractive broad, pyramidal shape without much fussing. Unlike many other pines, it has a gentle, almost romantic appearance thanks to its slightly drooping branches and soft colouring. New growth appears as light ‘candles’ in spring, adding extra interest. The bark becomes attractively fissured with age, adding winter appeal. This tree grows at a steady, manageable pace, making it suitable for most gardens. The blue-grey colour stays true all year round, looking particularly lovely when caught by winter sunlight or against dark backgrounds.
Plant your Japanese White Pine in a sunny or lightly shaded spot in well-drained soil. It’s not fussy about soil type but won’t cope with waterlogged conditions. Water regularly in the first growing season, then only during long dry spells once established. In spring, you can pinch out about half of the new candles to keep growth dense and compact. A yearly feed with a general-purpose fertiliser in spring is plenty. Avoid pruning in late autumn or winter – if needed, trim in late summer only.
