The Japanese White Pine ‘Kinpo’ – Pinus parviflora ‘Kinpo’, occasionally called Kimpo, is a striking dwarf conifer presented here in an elegant standard (lollipop) form, bringing the essence of Japanese gardens to any outdoor space. This cultivar is grafted onto a tall, clear stem, creating a distinctive head of dense, blue-green foliage perched atop an upright trunk — a refined and eye-catching feature for any setting.
The compact, rounded crown features distinctive blue-green needles arranged in dense, attractive bundles of five, creating a mesmerising textural display throughout the year. The needles carry a subtle twist and silvery undersides, catching the light beautifully and providing year-round interest. Grown in this standard form, the neat, ball-shaped head is further accentuated, making it an ideal choice for formal plantings, entrance ways, patios, and container displays where vertical structure and symmetry are desired.
In spring, fresh needle growth emerges in a soft, lighter shade before maturing to its characteristic blue-green colour. Small brown cones may appear on mature specimens, adding further decorative appeal. The clear stem develops an attractive grey-brown patina with age, complementing the plant’s sculptural presence and overall aesthetic value.
Care Guide:
Plant in well-drained, slightly acidic soil in full sun to partial shade. While tolerant of most soil types, avoid waterlogged conditions. In British gardens, ‘Kinpo’ proves remarkably hardy and can withstand winter temperatures, though young plants benefit from protection against harsh winds.
Water regularly during the first growing season to establish a strong root system. Once established, this pine shows good drought tolerance. Apply a thin layer of mulch in spring to retain moisture and suppress weeds, keeping it away from the trunk to prevent rot.
Little pruning is required beyond removing any dead or damaged growth in late winter. Feed sparingly with a balanced fertiliser in spring, as excessive feeding can promote unwanted vigorous growth.
