Japanese White Pine ‘Tempelhof’, botanically known as Pinus parviflora ‘Tempelhof’, is a stunning dwarf conifer that brings elegance and charm to UK gardens. This cultivar is prized for its compact, globe-shaped growth habit and beautiful blue-green needles. The needles are arranged in bundles of five, giving the tree a soft, feathery appearance. As it matures, ‘Tempelhof’ develops a slightly flattened top, reminiscent of a bonsai tree.
This slow-growing pine typically reaches only 1–2 metres in height over 10 years, making it perfect for small gardens, rock gardens, or container planting. In spring, small brown cones appear, adding further interest. The ‘Tempelhof’ cultivar was developed in Germany and named after the famous Berlin airport, reflecting its compact and well-structured form. Its slow growth rate and manageable size make it an excellent choice for gardeners looking for a low-maintenance evergreen specimen.
The Japanese White Pine ‘Tempelhof’ brings a touch of Japanese garden aesthetics to any outdoor space, creating a focal point of year-round beauty and tranquillity.
Japanese White Pine ‘Tempelhof’ is relatively easy to care for, making it suitable for both novice and experienced gardeners. It prefers full sun to partial shade and thrives in well-drained, slightly acidic soil. When planting, ensure good drainage, as this pine doesn’t tolerate waterlogged conditions. Water regularly during its first growing season to establish a deep root system, then reduce watering as it matures. This tree is drought-tolerant once established. Pruning isn’t usually necessary, but you can remove dead or damaged branches in late winter if needed. To maintain its compact shape, you can pinch back new growth in spring. ‘Tempelhof’ is generally pest and disease resistant, but keep an eye out for pine needle scale or spider mites. Protect from harsh winds, especially in winter. With proper care, this beautiful pine can be a long-lasting feature in your garden.
