The Monterey Pine brings a touch of California coast to gardens. This fast-growing evergreen has bright green needles in bundles of three, creating a lovely texture against the reddish-brown bark. The branches sweep outwards as they grow, forming a broad, spreading crown.

Young trees grow remarkably quickly, adding up to a metre each year in good conditions. The needles stay fresh and green all year round, making it brilliant for screening or windbreaks. In winter, the dense foliage offers shelter to garden birds.

This pine produces interesting cones that start green and mature to brown, often staying on the tree for several years. The bark develops a rich, plated pattern as it ages, adding extra interest throughout the year.

Though native to California, it grows very well in our climate, especially near the coast. It copes brilliantly with salt winds and exposed conditions. The bright green colour and rapid growth make it popular for quick results in larger gardens.

Plant your Monterey Pine in well-drained soil in a sunny spot. Though tough, it grows best in sheltered areas away from the coldest winds. Water well in the first growing season to help establish a good root system. After that, it needs little attention beyond removing any dead branches. The tree naturally fights off most problems and grows stronger in coastal areas.

Grown from seed at our nursery.
