Long-leaved Indian Pine – Pinus roxburghii is a magnificent three-needled pine that brings an exotic architectural presence to larger gardens. Also known as Chir Pine, this handsome evergreen conifer originates from the Himalayan foothills where it thrives at moderate elevations. The species is instantly recognisable by its exceptionally long, graceful needles that can reach 20-30cm in length, creating a distinctive drooping appearance that sets it apart from other pines. These slender, bright green needles are held in bundles of three and give the tree a soft, flowing texture that moves beautifully in the breeze.

The young trees develop an attractive pyramidal form with spreading branches that become more open and irregular with age, creating wonderful character. The bark on mature specimens develops into thick, reddish-brown plates that add winter interest and textural contrast to the garden. In spring, the new growth emerges as bright, pale green candles that stand upright before the needles extend and cascade downwards. The tree produces substantial cones that are typically 12-20cm long, oval to cylindrical in shape, and mature to a rich brown colour over two years.

Pinus roxburghii is surprisingly adaptable for a Himalayan species and can perform well in sheltered positions across much of Britain, though it appreciates protection from the coldest winter winds. This pine makes an outstanding specimen tree for larger gardens, parkland settings, or estates where it has room to develop its full character. The long, sweeping foliage creates wonderful movement and sound, particularly effective when planted where you can appreciate the play of light through the needles.

Care Guide

Plant in a sunny position with well-drained soil, as this pine will not tolerate waterlogged conditions. While it prefers slightly acidic to neutral soils, it shows good tolerance of a range of soil types provided drainage is adequate. Choose a sheltered location away from exposed positions and strong, cold winds, particularly in colder regions. Young plants benefit from protection during their first few winters until they become established.

Water regularly during the first growing season to establish a deep root system, then reduce frequency as the tree matures. Once established, Pinus roxburghii shows reasonable drought tolerance during summer months. Apply a general-purpose fertiliser in early spring to support healthy growth, and maintain a mulch layer around the root zone to conserve moisture and suppress weeds whilst keeping it clear of the trunk.

Pruning is generally unnecessary beyond removing any dead, damaged, or crossing branches in late winter or early spring. The natural form is part of the tree’s appeal, so avoid heavy pruning which can spoil the characteristic shape. Watch for common pine pests such as aphids and adelgids, though this species generally shows good resistance to most problems when grown in suitable conditions. In areas prone to late spring frosts, young growth may occasionally suffer damage, but the tree typically recovers well.
