The Weymouth or Eastern White Pine ‘Blue Shag’ is a charming dwarf pine that forms a neat, rounded mound of soft, blue-green needles. This compact evergreen grows slowly into a dense, mushroom-shaped shrub that rarely exceeds 1 metre in height and width, making it perfect for smaller gardens.

The long, fine needles have a lovely blue-grey tint and are arranged in bundles of five, creating a soft, touchable texture that looks great all year round. New growth appears in spring with a particularly bright blue tone, gradually deepening as the season progresses.

This little pine is brilliant for rock gardens, mixed borders or containers. Its neat, rounded shape needs no pruning to maintain its compact form. The blue-tinted foliage works wonderfully with other dwarf conifers and creates beautiful contrast with silver or purple-leaved plants.

‘Blue Shag’ grows best in well-drained soil in full sun, though it can cope with light shade. While young plants need regular watering to establish, mature specimens are quite drought tolerant. It’s best to plant in a sheltered spot away from strong winds. No pruning is needed as it naturally maintains its rounded shape. A mulch of pine needles or bark helps retain moisture and maintains soil acidity.
