Weymouth Pine ‘Pendula’ – Pinus strobus is a captivating weeping form of the classic Eastern White Pine, offering year-round architectural interest with its gracefully cascading branches. This stunning cultivar transforms the traditional upright pine into a dramatic specimen with soft, blue-green needles that sweep downwards in elegant curtains, creating a living sculpture that evolves beautifully through the seasons.

The distinctive weeping habit of ‘Pendula’ makes it an exceptional focal point for gardens of all sizes. Its flexible branches drape naturally, forming a unique silhouette that changes character depending on how it’s trained and staked. The fine-textured needles, arranged in bundles of five, are softer to the touch than many pine species, creating a feathery appearance that contrasts wonderfully with the more rigid structure of traditional conifers. The blue-green colouration provides a cool, calming presence throughout the year, whilst the bark develops attractive fissured patterns as the tree matures.

This specimen is supplied at 120-150cm height in a 10-litre pot, representing a well-established plant that will make an immediate impact in your garden. At this size, the tree has developed a strong root system and substantial framework, allowing you to shape its growth according to your design preferences. Whether you choose to stake it for height or allow it to cascade naturally over walls or slopes, ‘Pendula’ offers remarkable versatility.

Weymouth Pine ‘Pendula’ thrives in British gardens, showing excellent cold hardiness and adapting well to our variable climate. It performs best in full sun positions where it can develop its most dramatic weeping form, though it tolerates partial shade. The tree prefers moist, well-drained soils with good organic content but demonstrates admirable adaptability to different soil types, including slightly acidic to neutral conditions. Once established, it shows reasonable drought tolerance, though consistent moisture during dry spells encourages the best growth and needle colour.

Care Guide

Plant in a location with adequate space for the cascading branches to develop their full character. Dig a generous planting hole twice the width of the root ball, incorporating organic matter to improve soil structure and drainage. Water thoroughly after planting and maintain consistent moisture during the first two growing seasons whilst the root system establishes.

Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in early spring to support healthy growth and vibrant needle colour. A mulch layer of bark chips or well-rotted compost around the base helps retain moisture, suppress weeds, and gradually improves soil quality. Keep mulch away from direct contact with the trunk to prevent moisture-related issues.

Pruning requirements are minimal, though you can shape the tree during late winter or early spring to enhance its weeping habit. Remove any dead, damaged, or crossing branches to maintain good air circulation. If you’re training the tree upwards, secure the leader to a sturdy stake until it reaches your desired height, then allow the branches to cascade naturally.

The tree shows good resistance to common pests and diseases when grown in appropriate conditions. Monitor for pine needle scale or sawfly larvae during growing seasons, addressing any issues promptly. Ensure good air circulation around the plant to prevent fungal problems, particularly in sheltered or humid locations.

‘Pendula’ works magnificently as a specimen plant in lawns, gravel gardens, or mixed borders where its distinctive form can be fully appreciated. It’s equally effective in contemporary minimalist designs or traditional cottage garden settings. Consider positioning it where its silhouette can be admired from multiple viewpoints, particularly when backlit by morning or evening sun.
