The Bhutan Pine is one of the most graceful pine trees you can grow in a garden. Its long, soft, blue-grey needles hang in drooping clusters, creating a wonderfully weeping effect that sways beautifully in the breeze. Each bundle contains five needles that can reach up to 20cm long, giving the tree a distinctive, almost silky appearance.

The bark develops an attractive grey-brown pattern as it matures, adding winter interest when viewed up close. In spring, young shoots appear with a bluish bloom, and long cones develop which hang downward, adding to its graceful appearance. These cones start green and mature to brown, often staying on the tree for months.

Unlike many other pines that can look quite rigid, this tree has a lovely relaxed form that suits both traditional and modern gardens. It’s perfect as a specimen tree where its elegant outline can be fully appreciated. The soft, flowing needles catch the light brilliantly, especially when backlit by the evening sun.

The Bhutan Pine grows best in well-drained soil in full sun, though it will tolerate partial shade. While young trees need regular watering to establish, mature specimens are quite drought tolerant. It’s best to give it space to develop its natural shape as it doesn’t respond well to heavy pruning. A yearly mulch helps retain moisture and suppress weeds, but otherwise, it’s a relatively low-maintenance tree.
