Chinese golden cedar ‘Aurea Nana’ (2L)

Originally from China and Korea, this charming conifer has graced gardens for over 1,000 years and remains a favourite for its reliable nature and cheerful appearance.

The modern ‘Aurea Nana’ variety is a gem for gardens, especially where space is limited. Its naturally compact form grows into a lovely rounded shape without any need for trimming. The striking golden-green foliage holds its colour well throughout the year, brightening up even the dullest winter days.

This conifer is brilliantly suited to British gardens, handling our varied weather with ease. It’s particularly good in urban settings as it doesn’t mind pollution and grows slowly, typically reaching only 1-1.5m in height over many years. This slow growth rate means it won’t outgrow its space.

The dense, fan-like sprays of foliage create wonderful texture in the garden. In winter, the foliage takes on subtle bronze tints, adding extra interest. It’s perfect for adding structure to borders or creating focal points in small spaces.

These little trees are incredibly versatile. They work beautifully in rockeries, gravel gardens, and containers. They’re particularly good for adding height to patio displays or framing entranceways. Their neat habit means they’re brilliant for low-maintenance gardens.

The ‘Aurea Nana’ is tough as old boots once established. It handles both sunny and partially shaded spots and isn’t fussy about soil, though it prefers good drainage. It’s also remarkably drought-tolerant once settled in.
