‘Aurea Nana’ is a slow-growing variety, typically reaching only 1-1.5 metres in height and width over 10 years. This small size makes it perfect for rock gardens, small spaces, or container planting. Its compact, globe-like shape requires little to no pruning, making it a low-maintenance choice for busy gardeners.
The scale-like foliage of ‘Aurea Nana’ creates an interesting texture in the garden. In winter, the foliage may take on a bronze tint, adding another dimension of colour to your outdoor space. This colour change provides year-round interest, ensuring your garden remains visually appealing even in the coldest months.
Native to China and Korea, this conifer has been cultivated for centuries. The ‘Aurea Nana’ cultivar was selected for its dwarf habit and golden colouring. It has become popular in UK gardens for its ability to add a bright spot of colour without overwhelming smaller spaces.
Choose ‘Aurea Nana’ to add a touch of gold to your garden. Its cheery colour can lighten up shady areas or create contrast with darker green plants. Whether used as a standalone specimen, in groups, or as part of a mixed border, this little conifer is sure to catch the eye and bring a smile to your face.
‘Aurea Nana’ is very hardy and can tolerate cold winters, down to -20C.
Chinese Golden Cedar ‘Aurea Nana’ is fairly easy to care for in UK gardens. Plant it in full sun to partial shade for the best colour development. It prefers well-drained soil but is adaptable to various soil types, including slightly alkaline conditions. Water regularly during its first growing season to establish a strong root system. Once established, it’s relatively drought-tolerant but benefits from occasional deep watering during dry spells. Feed with a slow-release, balanced fertiliser in spring. Pruning is generally not necessary due to its naturally compact form.
