The Douglas Fir ‘Blue Wonder’ is a stunning medium-sized conifer that brings a splash of bright blue to gardens. Its lovely conical shape and striking blue-green needles make it a real standout tree. The soft, flat needles stick out from the branches in an open, spreading pattern that catches light beautifully.

Growing at a steady pace, it reaches about 2-3 metres in height over 10 years, making it more manageable than the wild Douglas Fir. The blue colour is particularly eye-catching, especially when planted against darker green plants or as a focal point in a mixed border. First grown in the Netherlands in 1910, this variety was chosen for its outstanding blue colour, which garden experts consider one of the finest among blue conifers. It’s brilliant for adding structure and winter interest to gardens, looking particularly festive when touched by frost.

‘Blue Wonder’ is fairly easy to grow in British gardens. It needs full sun to develop its best blue colour and prefers moist, slightly acidic soil. Good drainage is important, so add organic matter when planting if your soil is heavy clay. Water regularly in the first few growing seasons until established. After that, it’s quite drought tolerant but benefits from water during very dry spells. No regular pruning is needed – it naturally keeps its nice conical shape. A yearly feed with an ericaceous fertiliser in spring will keep the blue colour bright.
