The Douglas fir ‘Serpentine’ is a remarkable conifer cultivar of Pseudotsuga menziesii, prized for its uniquely contorted and weeping growth habit that creates a striking architectural presence in gardens. This slow-growing variety develops fascinating snake-like branches that twist and curve, forming an irregular, cascading silhouette that becomes more characterful with age.
The needles are soft and fragrant, displaying a lovely blue-green colour on top with distinctive silvery-white bands beneath. When crushed, they release a sweet, citrus-like fragrance that adds sensory appeal. Unlike the species, which grows tall and straight, ‘Serpentine’ maintains a more compact, spreading form that makes it perfectly suited to smaller gardens and featured positions.
In spring, fresh bright green growth emerges, gradually darkening to create beautiful depth and contrast throughout the growing season. Small cones appear in maturity, hanging decoratively among the twisted branches and adding winter interest.
For optimal growth in British gardens, plant in full sun to partial shade in well-drained, slightly acidic soil. While adaptable to most soil types, avoid waterlogged conditions. This cultivar shows excellent hardiness and wind resistance, though young plants benefit from protection against severe frost. Regular watering is essential during the first growing season to establish a strong root system.
Minimal pruning is required – simply remove any dead or damaged branches in late winter. A light feed with a balanced fertiliser in spring will support healthy growth. This architectural conifer works beautifully as a specimen plant, in rock gardens, or as part of a mixed conifer collection.
