A semi-mature oak tree (approx 5 years old) ready to begin its journey as your very own bonsai masterpiece. Starting with a young oak gives you the perfect chance to shape and train it exactly as you’d like. The mighty oak, traditionally seen as a symbol of strength in gardens, takes brilliantly to bonsai training. Your starter tree comes with plenty of small branches that you can wire and shape. While regular oaks grow into massive specimens, bonsai training lets you create a perfect miniature version, complete with the oak’s characteristically sturdy trunk and lovely lobed leaves. The leaves will naturally grow smaller with proper bonsai techniques. You’ll get to watch the bark develop its rugged texture, just like its larger cousins.
This 10-litre pot size gives the roots plenty of room to establish while you begin training. Bonsai is a rewarding hobby that demands patience, and an oak is an excellent choice for beginners keen to master the art.
Keep your oak bonsai starter outdoors in a sheltered spot with good light but some protection from harsh afternoon sun. Water when the top of the soil feels dry, and never let it dry out completely. Feed fortnightly during the growing season with a balanced bonsai fertiliser. In winter, protect the roots from hard frost by moving the pot close to a house wall or into an unheated greenhouse. Start pruning and wiring in the second year, making small changes gradually. Repot every two to three years in spring using a free-draining bonsai soil mix.
Please note: Decorative pots shown are for display purposes only. Your tree will be supplied in a standard plastic nursery pot shown in the other pictures.
