Pin Oak – Quercus palustris is a graceful North American oak grown for its finely cut foliage, neat pyramidal outline and reliable autumn colour. This young tree is supplied at 20/40cm tall in a P9 pot, a practical starting size for anyone planting a woodland edge, parkland feature, shelter belt or a future specimen tree with plenty of time on their side.
The leaves are the distinguishing feature: deeply lobed with narrow, bristle-tipped segments and wide U-shaped sinuses, giving each leaf an almost lacy appearance. Through spring and summer they are a glossy mid to dark green, turning shades of bronze, scarlet and deep russet-red in autumn. Younger trees often hold their faded brown leaves well into winter, a habit known as marcescence, which adds some structure and rustle to bare winter planting.
The common name comes from the short, pin-like shoots that stud the branches. A mature pin oak develops a straight central leader with upswept upper branches, horizontal middle branches and distinctly drooping lower branches, creating a layered, almost tiered profile that is easy to recognise from a distance. Acorns are small, rounded and shallowly capped, taking two years to ripen, and they are a useful food source for jays, squirrels and other garden wildlife. The tree also supports a good range of insects, making it a sound choice where biodiversity matters.
Quercus palustris tolerates seasonally wet ground far better than many oaks, which makes it suitable for heavier soils and low-lying sites that occasionally sit damp in winter. It does, however, dislike chalk and alkaline conditions, where leaves can turn yellow between the veins. On neutral to acidic soil it is fast-growing, wind-firm and long-lived.
Care Guide
Plant between late autumn and early spring while the tree is dormant, choosing a sunny or lightly shaded position with shelter from harsh, drying winds in the first few seasons. Pin oak performs best on moisture-retentive, neutral to acidic soil; avoid shallow chalk.
Because this is a small P9 plant at 20/40cm, many growers prefer to pot it on into a 3 to 5 litre container for a year or two before planting out, which allows the root system to build strength. If planting directly, clear a metre-wide circle of grass and weeds, dig a square hole no deeper than the root ball, and firm gently without compacting.
Water thoroughly after planting and keep the soil consistently moist through the first two or three British summers, particularly during dry spells in June to August. A 5 to 7cm mulch of bark or well-rotted compost, kept clear of the stem, conserves moisture and suppresses competition.
Feeding is rarely necessary on reasonable soil, though a balanced slow-release fertiliser in early spring will help young trees establish. Protect the stem from rabbits and deer with a spiral guard or mesh. Pruning should be minimal: remove damaged, crossing or competing leading shoots in late winter to encourage a single straight trunk. Fully hardy throughout Britain.

Our unique tall 9cm pots is a smart strategy for cultivating trees with strong and deep root systems. This practice can lead to healthier and more resilient trees that are better prepared for transplantation and long-term growth in your UK garden.
Promoting Deep Root Development with Tall 9cm Pots:
1. Enhanced Root Growth: Using tall pots, such as 9cm pots, encourages trees to develop a deeper and more extensive root system. The added height of the pot allows the tree’s roots to grow downward, seeking nutrients and water in the lower soil layers.
2. Reduced Root Circling: Traditional, shallower pots can sometimes lead to root circling, where the roots grow in a circular pattern around the pot’s base. This can restrict the tree’s ability to access essential resources. Tall pots mitigate this issue, as roots are less likely to encounter physical barriers that encourage circling.
3. Improved Stability: The additional depth provided by tall pots offers improved stability for young trees. It allows for better anchoring and support, which is particularly important during periods of strong winds or inclement weather.
4. Better Soil Temperature Regulation: Tall pots offer improved insulation for the root system. This can help maintain more stable soil temperatures, protecting the roots from extreme heat or cold. This is crucial for healthy root development, especially in the unpredictable UK climate.
5. Reduced Transplant Shock: When it’s time to transplant a tree from a tall pot into the ground, the deeper root system developed in the tall pot can reduce transplant shock. The tree is better equipped to establish itself in its new environment.
6. Versatility: Tall pots are versatile and can accommodate a wide range of tree species. They are particularly useful for growing trees that have a taproot, which naturally grows deeper.
