Probably the best-loved British native tree, the English Oak is a familiar sight in parkland and the countryside.
The English Oak – Quercus, also known as the common oak, is a cornerstone of British landscapes and gardens, deeply woven into the country’s natural heritage. This majestic deciduous tree is celebrated for its remarkable longevity, with many specimens gracing gardens and parks for several centuries. As it matures, the English Oak develops a broad, rounded crown with a substantial trunk and characterful, spreading branches that create a captivating silhouette in all seasons.
Its distinctive leaves are deeply lobed and dark green, transforming into warm hues of yellow and russet in autumn, providing a spectacular display before falling. Spring brings a flush of fresh green growth and long catkins, followed by the iconic acorns in autumn, which have been a vital food source for wildlife for millennia. The English Oak’s value to our gardens extends far beyond its ornamental appeal; it’s a veritable haven for biodiversity, supporting an astounding variety of life.
Over 2,300 species of birds, insects, fungi, and other wildlife depend on it for food and shelter, making it an excellent choice for gardeners keen on nurturing local ecosystems. In garden settings, a single English Oak can become a magnificent focal point, its spreading canopy offering dappled shade perfect for understory planting or summer relaxation. While best suited to larger spaces due to its ultimate size, younger oaks can be managed in more modest gardens with thoughtful pruning. Aaptable to various soil types and conditions across the UK, the English Oak is relatively low-maintenance once established, making it an excellent choice for gardeners looking to plant a tree that will become a lasting legacy. Whether as part of a native woodland garden, a stand-alone specimen in a large lawn, or as the centrepiece of a wildlife-friendly planting scheme, Quercus offers UK gardeners the opportunity to nurture a living piece of British natural heritage. Its presence in a garden not only enhances the aesthetic appeal but also contributes significantly to local biodiversity, creating a mini-ecosystem that will thrive and evolve for generations to come.
These are UK grown by ourselves at our nursery.
They are a mix of Pedunculate Oak, Sessile Oak, Pedunculate & Sessile Hybrids – often referred to as English / Common Oak.
Plant your English Oak in full sun to partial shade in well-drained soil. It’s adaptable to various soil types but prefers deep, fertile ground. Water regularly during the first few growing seasons to establish a deep root system. Once established, it’s drought-tolerant but appreciates occasional deep watering during prolonged dry spells. Fertilisation is generally unnecessary unless the soil is particularly poor. Prune only to remove dead, diseased, or crossing branches, ideally during winter dormancy. Watch for signs of oak processionary moth in affected areas. This hardy tree is generally resistant to most pests and diseases, making it a low-maintenance choice.
