The English Oak Quercus robur makes a stunning choice for growing as a characterful, compact specimen. These small trees, with their naturally twisted shapes and low branches, bring the majesty of ancient oaks to any space.
When grown in this style, each tree develops its own unique personality. The branches grow into fascinating shapes, often spreading wider than the tree’s height. The gnarly stems and low-sweeping branches create a lovely aged look, just like a miniature version of those ancient oaks found in old parkland.
The leaves stay small but keep their classic oak shape with wavy edges. In spring, fresh green growth appears, followed by tiny acorns in autumn. The leaves turn lovely shades of gold and russet before falling, showing off the tree’s sculptural framework in winter.
Plant your character oak in well-drained soil in sun or light shade. Regular light pruning in summer helps keep the compact shape and encourages the gnarled, spreading form. Water regularly but don’t waterlog. A yearly feed in spring keeps it healthy. Remove any dead wood in late winter and shape as needed to maintain the desired form.
