Red Oak ‘Magic Fire’ – Quercus rubra is an exceptional cultivar that delivers vibrant seasonal colour to gardens through its outstanding foliage display. This compact form of the American red oak has been specifically selected for its intense autumn tones and manageable size, making it perfect for smaller spaces where the species would be too large. The 20/40cm plant supplied in a 2-litre pot represents a young specimen ready to establish in your garden.
The foliage emerges in spring with attractive bronze-red tones before maturing to glossy green throughout summer. Each leaf is deeply lobed in the characteristic oak fashion, creating excellent texture and architectural interest. Where ‘Magic Fire’ truly excels is during autumn, when the leaves transform into a spectacular display of fiery scarlets, deep crimsons and burnt oranges that persist for several weeks before falling.
This cultivar maintains a more compact habit than the straight species, developing into a medium-sized tree with an attractive rounded crown. The bark becomes increasingly fissured and characterful with age, adding winter interest once the leaves have dropped. Like all oaks, it will eventually produce acorns, though these typically appear on more mature specimens.
Red Oak ‘Magic Fire’ performs reliably in gardens, showing good tolerance to urban pollution and a wide range of soil conditions. Its moderate growth rate allows you to enjoy watching it develop without it quickly outgrowing its allotted space. The tree provides valuable habitat for wildlife, with the foliage supporting numerous insects and the acorns feeding birds and small mammals.
Care Guide
Plant in full sun or partial shade for the best autumn colour development. Red Oak ‘Magic Fire’ adapts to most well-drained soils, including clay, loam and sandy types. It prefers slightly acidic to neutral conditions but will tolerate mildly alkaline soils. Avoid waterlogged sites as this can lead to root problems.
Water regularly during the first two growing seasons to establish a strong root system, particularly during dry spells. Once established, the tree becomes reasonably drought-tolerant, though supplementary watering during prolonged dry periods will maintain vigorous growth and better foliage quality.
Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in early spring to support healthy growth. A mulch of well-rotted organic matter around the base helps retain moisture, suppress weeds and gradually improves soil structure. Keep the mulch clear of the trunk to prevent bark problems.
Pruning is rarely necessary beyond removing any dead, damaged or crossing branches. If required, prune during late autumn or winter when the tree is dormant to minimise sap bleeding. Young trees benefit from formative pruning to develop a strong framework with a clear central leader.
