The Flowering Currant – Ribes sanguineum is a delightful deciduous shrub that brings a burst of colour to gardens in early spring. Native to western North America but widely cultivated in the UK, this hardy plant is cherished for its pendant clusters of pink to red flowers that appear before the leaves, typically in March and April. These fragrant blossoms not only provide a visual treat but also serve as an important early nectar source for bees and other pollinators emerging from winter dormancy. Following the flowers, the shrub develops lobed, maple-like leaves that offer an attractive green backdrop throughout summer before turning yellow in autumn.

Growing to a height and spread of 1.5-2 meters, the Flowering Currant forms a bushy, upright habit that makes it ideal for mixed borders, informal hedges, or as a standalone specimen. Its versatility in the garden is matched by its ease of care, thriving in most soil types and tolerating both sun and partial shade. In late summer, the plant produces small, dark berries that, while edible, are usually left for birds to enjoy.

Ribes sanguineum has several cultivars available, offering variations in flower colour from pale pink to deep red, allowing gardeners to choose the perfect shade for their landscape. Some popular varieties include ‘King Edward VII’ with its bright red flowers, and ‘White Icicle’ which offers elegant white blooms.

This shrub is not only ornamental but also beneficial for wildlife. Besides providing early nectar for insects, it offers shelter for birds and small mammals. The dense growth habit makes it an excellent choice for creating natural, wildlife-friendly boundaries in the garden.

Flowering Currant is also known for its aromatic foliage, which releases a pleasant, spicy scent when brushed against or after rain. This feature adds an extra sensory dimension to the garden experience, making it a favourite among those who appreciate fragrant plants.

Plant your Flowering Currant in full sun to partial shade in well-drained soil. It’s adaptable to most soil types but prefers slightly acidic to neutral conditions. Water regularly during the first growing season to establish a strong root system. Once established, it’s drought-tolerant. Prune after flowering to maintain shape and encourage vigorous growth. Feed with a balanced fertilizer in spring. This hardy shrub is generally resistant to pests and diseases, making it low-maintenance and ideal for busy gardeners.
