The Violet Willow – Salix daphnoides is a striking tree that brings drama to winter gardens. Its most eye-catching feature is the deep purple-violet bark that’s covered in a white bloom, similar to the coating on plums. This colouring is particularly vivid on young stems, creating spectacular winter interest.

The leaves are long and narrow with a glossy dark green upper surface and silvery undersides, dancing beautifully in the breeze. In early spring, before the leaves appear, large silky catkins cover the branches. The male catkins are particularly showy, covered in golden yellow pollen that attracts early bees.

This fast-growing tree is perfect for damp areas of the garden where other trees might struggle. It can be grown as either a multi-stemmed shrub or trained as a small tree. Regular pruning encourages lots of new growth, which shows the brightest winter stem colour.

Violet Willow grows best in moist, well-drained soil but can cope with most conditions except very dry spots. It thrives in full sun or partial shade. For the best winter stem colour, prune hard in early spring – you can cut all stems down to about 15cm from the ground. This encourages lots of new, brightly coloured growth. Water well during dry spells, especially in the first growing season. Apply a thick mulch in spring to retain moisture.
