Willow ‘Mount Aso’, botanically known as Salix gracilistyla ‘Mount Aso’, is a stunning deciduous shrub that brings a splash of vibrant colour to UK gardens. This cultivar is particularly prized for its eye-catching catkins, which emerge in late winter to early spring before the leaves appear.

The catkins are large, fluffy, and a striking bright pink colour, creating a spectacular display against the bare branches. As spring progresses, the shrub develops attractive, narrow, lance-shaped leaves with a silvery-green hue. ‘Mount Aso’ typically grows to a height and spread of 1.5-2.5 meters, making it suitable for smaller gardens or as part of mixed borders in larger landscapes. Its compact size also makes it an excellent choice for container planting.

This willow variety is named after Mount Aso, an active volcano in Japan, reflecting its fiery pink catkins. The plant not only provides visual interest but also serves as an important early source of nectar for pollinators, making it a valuable addition to wildlife-friendly gardens. With its combination of winter interest, spring colour, and ecological benefits, Willow ‘Mount Aso’ is a versatile and attractive shrub for UK gardeners.

Willow ‘Mount Aso’ is relatively easy to care for, making it suitable for both novice and experienced gardeners. It prefers a position in full sun or partial shade and thrives in moist, well-drained soil. This willow is particularly tolerant of wet conditions, making it ideal for damp areas of the garden. Regular watering is essential, especially during dry spells, to maintain the health and vigour of the plant. Pruning should be done in late spring or early summer after flowering to maintain shape and encourage bushiness. ‘Mount Aso’ responds well to hard pruning if needed to rejuvenate the plant. Apply a balanced fertilizer in spring to promote healthy growth. While generally hardy, protect young plants from strong winds. Keep an eye out for common willow pests such as aphids or willow beetle, although ‘Mount Aso’ is generally resistant to most issues. With proper care, this willow will provide years of stunning displays in your garden.
