The Flamingo Willow, Salix integra ‘Flamingo’, is a delightful deciduous shrub that brings a splash of colour to the garden. This cultivar is prized for its vibrant foliage, which emerges in spring as a striking mix of pink, white, and green. As the leaves mature, they settle into a variegated pattern of green and white, creating a bright, fresh look throughout the growing season. The slender stems add to the visual interest, often taking on a reddish hue, especially in winter when the leaves have fallen.
Typically growing to a height and spread of 1.5-2.5 metres, the Flamingo Willow has a naturally bushy habit that can be easily shaped through pruning. In late winter or early spring, it produces small, furry catkins that add another dimension of interest. This willow is particularly effective when planted in groups or used as an informal hedge, where its colourful foliage can create a lively boundary.
As a member of the willow family, this shrub is naturally tolerant of damp conditions, making it an excellent choice for areas near water features or in rain gardens. It’s also a valuable plant for wildlife, providing early-season nectar for bees and other pollinators, and shelter for small birds.
Plant your Flamingo Willow in full sun or partial shade in moist, well-drained soil. It’s adaptable to most soil types but prefers slightly acidic conditions. Water regularly, especially in dry spells. For the best foliage colour and compact shape, prune hard in early spring. Feed with a balanced fertiliser after pruning to encourage vigorous new growth. This shrub is generally pest and disease resistant but can occasionally suffer from willow scab or cankers in very wet conditions.
