This striking variety of our native elder was developed in recent years to combine the beauty of golden foliage with a space-saving columnar habit, making it perfect for modern gardens.

The ‘Golden Tower’ brings a brilliant splash of colour to gardens with its bright golden leaves that seem to glow in the sunlight. These feathery, divided leaves create a lovely textural display and hold their colour well throughout the growing season, especially when planted in full sun.

Unlike traditional elders that can become rather unruly, this variety grows in a neat, upright column. It’s a brilliant choice for narrow spaces, reaching up rather than out. The compact habit means it won’t take over your garden but still provides plenty of vertical interest.

In early summer, the plant produces clusters of sweetly scented cream flowers that stand out beautifully against the golden foliage. These blooms are a magnet for bees and butterflies, bringing welcome wildlife to your garden. The flowers are followed by glossy black berries that attract garden birds.

This elder is remarkably tough and adaptable. It’s fully hardy in British gardens and grows happily in most soil types, though it prefers things on the moist side. It’s also quite quick to establish, making a good show within a couple of growing seasons.

‘Golden Tower’ works brilliantly as a striking focal point or in groups to create golden screens. It’s particularly good for adding height to borders without spreading sideways, and its bright foliage helps to light up shadier corners of the garden.
