Sciadopitys verticillata, commonly known as Japanese Umbrella Pine, is a unique and elegant conifer. It’s not actually a pine, but a living fossil with no close relatives.

This slow-growing tree is prized for its distinctive appearance. Its dark green needles are arranged in whorls, resembling the spokes of an umbrella. This feature gives the tree its common name.

Japanese Umbrella Pine has a conical shape when young. As it matures, it develops a more open, irregular form. It can reach heights of 20-30 feet in gardens, though it grows much taller in its native Japan.

The tree’s bark is reddish-brown and peels in thin strips, adding winter interest. In spring, small cones appear, enhancing its ornamental value.

This conifer is perfect for creating a striking focal point in gardens. Its unusual form and texture contrast beautifully with other plants. It’s ideal for Japanese-style gardens or as a specimen tree.

Caring for Sciadopitys verticillata is straightforward, but it requires patience due to its slow growth. Plant it in a spot with full sun to partial shade. It prefers moist, well-draining, slightly acidic soil. Water regularly during its first few years to establish a strong root system. Once established, it’s moderately drought-tolerant but appreciates consistent moisture. Mulch around the base to retain soil moisture and suppress weeds. Pruning is generally not necessary. If needed, do it in late winter or early spring. Feed annually in spring with a slow-release, balanced fertiliser. Japanese Umbrella Pine is generally pest and disease resistant. However, keep an eye out for spider mites in dry conditions. This tree benefits from protection from strong winds, especially in colder regions.
