Coast Redwood ‘Lightning’, a captivating new cultivar of Sequoia sempervirens, brings a flash of brilliance to gardens with its distinctive pale yellow-tipped foliage. This remarkable tree offers a fresh twist on the classic Coast Redwood, combining the species’ majestic potential with a unique colour palette that sets it apart in the world of conifers.

The standout feature of ‘Lightning’ is its foliage. The bright, pale yellow tips create a striking contrast against the deeper green inner needles, giving the tree an almost illuminated appearance, as if it’s been touched by bolts of lightning. This variegation adds depth and interest to the tree’s overall look, making it a focal point in any landscape.

Unlike the typical Coast Redwood, ‘Lightning’ boasts more tightly formed leaves. This compact growth habit results in a denser, more sculpted appearance, enhancing its ornamental value. The tighter foliage also means it may be more resilient to wind damage, a useful trait for UK gardens.

As a relatively new cultivar, ‘Lightning’ offers gardeners the chance to be at the forefront of horticultural trends. It’s an excellent choice for collectors and enthusiasts looking to add something truly special to their conifer collections. In larger landscapes, it can serve as a magnificent specimen tree, while in smaller gardens, its early years can be enjoyed as a container plant or a manageable focal point.

While it may not reach the towering heights of its wild cousins in the forests of California, ‘Lightning’ still has the potential to become a substantial tree over time. Its growth rate in UK conditions may be slower than in its native range, which can be an advantage for those wanting to enjoy its unique characteristics for longer at a manageable size.

The pale yellow tips of ‘Lightning’ can bring a welcome brightness to shaded areas of the garden, seeming to glow in low light conditions. This makes it particularly valuable in UK gardens, where it can add a touch of luminosity on overcast days.
