Sequoia sempervirens ‘Winter Blue’ brings seasonal theatre to the garden with its remarkable colour-changing display. This fast-growing Coast Redwood cultivar develops a classic pyramidal shape, but it’s the stunning foliage transformation that sets it apart. While maintaining beautiful blue-green tones throughout summer, the needles develop an intensified silvery-blue hue as temperatures drop, creating a magnificent winter spectacle.

The seasonal colour shift makes this cultivar particularly valuable in the winter garden, where its enhanced blue tones provide striking structure and interest during the darker months. Against the muted colours of winter, ‘Winter Blue’ stands as a shimmering sentinel, its foliage taking on an almost ethereal quality when touched by frost or morning dew.

This selection from our specialist Sequoia collection demonstrates why Coast Redwoods continue to captivate gardeners. Its vigorous growth ensures rapid establishment, whilst the natural pyramidal form develops without demanding extensive maintenance. Young specimens quickly develop into impressive architectural features, their shifting colours marking the passage of seasons.

Like its parent species, Sequoia sempervirens ‘Winter Blue’ brings vertical drama to the garden, but with added seasonal sophistication. The blue-tinted foliage harmonises beautifully with both evergreen and deciduous plantings, creating year-round interest with its subtle colour variations.

Whether used as a standalone specimen or as part of a larger conifer collection, this cultivar offers a dynamic presence in the garden. The combination of classic redwood elegance with enhanced winter colouration makes ‘Winter Blue’ particularly valuable for larger gardens where its seasonal performance can be fully appreciated against the winter landscape.

Plant Sequoia sempervirens ‘Winter Blue’ in a sunny or partly shaded position to optimise foliage colour. Well-draining soil is essential. While hardy once established, young plants benefit from shelter against harsh winds. Water regularly during the first growing season to establish a strong root system. The natural pyramidal form needs minimal pruning. Apply a mulch in spring to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
