The Sequoiadendron giganteum, commonly called the giant sequoia or giant redwood, is classified as “Endangered” by the IUCN Red List, indicating a high extinction risk in its natural habitat. This status stems from past logging practices and ongoing habitat destruction. Despite conservation efforts, these ancient trees face challenges from shifting climate patterns, pathogens, and forest fires. Safeguarding their ecosystems and promoting cultivation are vital for the species’ long-term survival.

These colossal conifers can exceed 30 meters in height, featuring a distinctive conical shape and reddish-brown bark that captures the evening light beautifully. Once widespread across Europe and Asia, their last natural stands now exist on the American West Coast, specifically in California.

The UK has seen increasing popularity of giant sequoias in both private gardens and public spaces. The tallest UK specimen, over 150 years old, reaches 55 meters in Scotland. These trees often appear in lists of the most impressive trees worldwide.

Sequoiadendron giganteum holds several notable distinctions:

  • They rank among Earth’s largest organisms, with some reaching over 91 meters tall.
  • Some specimens are estimated to be more than 3,000 years old.
  • They possess unparalleled volume, with the “General Sherman” tree in Sequoia National Park being the largest by volume.
  • The “General Grant” tree in Kings Canyon National Park boasts the largest base circumference at about 32.6 meters.
  • The Giant Forest in Sequoia National Park hosts a remarkable concentration of these trees.

The Royal Horticultural Society has honoured the Sequoiadendron giganteum (also known as Wellingtonia) with its prestigious Award of Garden Merit.
